Brian Hemmings' book taught me a great deal about a sport I have played for nearly 40 years. This book contains simple, easy to implement ideas which will help golfers of all ages and abilities—I recommend it.
Duncan Weir, Director of Golf Development, The R&A
This book gives a fascinating insight into the mental skills used by many successful players to deal with the challenges they have faced at crucial times in their careers - all of which can be related to situations faced by golfers at all levels. Each chapter skillfully suggests opportunities for the reader to apply the techniques used by top players in their own game, and does this very simply. I have always thought that serious golfers ignore the mental side of the game at their peril, and this book has only re-inforced that view. I can thoroughly recommend it.
David Hares, Former Gloucester County Champion, Chairman of Coaching Gloucester County Golf Union
I finished the book and thought it was brilliant. I have even started to read it again already!!
Myles Pearson, Staffordshire County Champion 2008
When I was preparing to make my professional debut in the SAS Masters all I could read was exactly what Justin Rose had been through in 1998. I had a nearly identical experience at The Open in 2008 at Birkdale. Reading his chapter in mental toughness for golf made me realise what Justin had realised a year or two later. What I had done prior to the Open...I knew I was a good enough player to achieve that. It wasn't just a one off.
Chris Wood, 5th Place at Open Championship, 2008, Silver Medal Winner
A great read and I particularly liked the chapters on Nick Faldo and Fame More.
Rory Kirwan, Midland Order of Merit Tournament Winner
Mental Toughness For Golf is the sort of book sports people from any walk of life or from any level can really get a great deal from. Brian Hemmings has captured in this book the essence of what sets players apart from the rest who have achieved within their chosen discipline when under great pressure. It's an entertaining thought provoking read, a perfect gift for any golfer and an enjoyable addition to anyone's library on achievement in sport.
Gary Wolstenhome, MBE; 2 Time British Amateur Champion, 6 times Walker Cup player, Record 218 England International Caps
I have stopped counting the number of books that I have come across about the mental game in golf. Still this book is worth spending some time over as it is a true breath of fresh air. The theoretical background of Hemmings and Mantle combined with the real life stories from players sharing their experiences will give every reader food for thought and a chance to step up their mental toughness.
Peter Mattsson, Director of Coaching, English Golf Union
A really enjoyable read.
Brian Hermiston
This is a fantastic book which all levels of golfer can take something from. It is different from most golf psychology books because it is broken down in to true life short stories of succesful golfers and situations in each of their careers where psychology helped them succeed. Everyone will enjoy the Faldo and Monty stories but I particularly enjoyed reading some of the stories of the lesser known golfers and hearing in their own words how they were thinking at certain moments of triumph. Then the authors have done a great job in putting accross how each situation can help you with your own game.
Mark Thistleton, England golfer, Hayling Island GC
It is great to read how champions and other golfers react when under pressure. At tournaments we can all watch great players but we never know what they are thinking about. This book gives a great insight into the minds of golfers. What is so good is Brian Hemmings' summary of the situation the golfer is in and how he goes about the situation. It is a must read if you want to know what makes a Champion or player tick in the mind game of golf.
David Ridley FPGA, Lead Coach EGU National Squad,Top 25 Golf Monthly Coach
An insight into players' minds that can be invaluable to the developing golfer.
Graham Walker, Lead Coach England A Squad, European Tour Coach, Yorkshire County Coach.
Mental Toughness for Golf offers an inside the ropes view of golf at a very high level. It relates how these accomplished players are human, how they experience doubts and fears, and most importantly how they have developed coping strategies that every golfer can benefit from.
Paul Ashwell, Lead Coach England Under 18 Squad & Golf Monthly Top 25 UK coach
Brian Hemmings' considerable experience at the highest level in the game has produced a fascinating read entitled, Mental Toughness for Golf. It is packed full of 'inside the ropes' accounts of players' feelings and experiences in all manner of situations. It has helped me understand even more how players tick.
Gary Smith, England elite coach, Golf Monthly Top 25 UK coach
Self critique is at best a 'challenge' for us all and yet it's probably the most rewarding 'off course' activity any golfer can undertake. Having worked alongside Brian, with England's best amateur golfers, his talent for provoking constructive and positive thought processes turned players into winners. This book will benefit anyone committed to improving their golf and
beats the golf range on a cold and windy winter's day hands down!
Jonathan Plaxton, England Golf Captain 2007-9
'Mental Toughness for Golf' is a great read, it gives you an insight into the minds of some great golfers and how they deal with real life situations in pursuit of becoming champions. The stories, re-laid direct from the players themselves, provide thought provoking ideas which will help any golfer to develop mental skills and techniques to improve their performance.
Nigel Furniss, Director, Derbyshire Golf Academy
I really enjoyed the book....a great idea to marry up players experiences with sound messages.
Keith Williams, European Tour coach
I am a seven handicap golfer and found this book fascinating and a really easy, enjoyable read. This is a great book for players of any level to understand and appreciate what it takes to improve their game. It all seems so logical when you read in these great players'own words how they have dealt with various testing situations throughout their careers. But the best thing is that you don't need to be a famous golfer to appreciate how these particular methods, or processes, can be applied to your own game and even to life outside of golf.
Gary Edwards, Kingsthorpe GC
How many of us aspiring sports men and women invest considerable sums of our hard earned cash on the latest technological 'panacea' for our sports and find that the margin of performance improvement that it offers is just that - marginal? Well, in my opinion this book is one investment that delivers performance improvements of magnitude with little cost. It doesn't disappoint. Having been aware of some of Dr. Hemmings earlier Golf Mental Skills strategies with his 'In the Zone' programme, I found that 'Mental Toughness' took these to a whole new level. A fascinating, yet straightforward read that's written in a way that makes it even easier to relate and apply to the sport, I really enjoyed this book. You can either dip into it as and when or read it cover to cover. There are lots of specific and relevant experiences of top players used to convey the underlying message - that essentially not only acknowledges the mental aspect and challenge of the game but more usefully equips the reader with the armoury to train these to positive effect.
Martin Wright, 2 handicap
A fascinating insight into how performers at the very top of their profession achieve greatness. This book not only provides inspiration by the bucket load, moreover, it equips the reader with the tools to tackle the demons they encounter on the golf course, in their career and in day to day life. The intellectual mumbo-jumbo and high-brow terminology so often engrained this type of text has been eloquently carved into easily digestable pieces. That is not to say that the content is sugar-coated. It is real and honest.I get more and more out of it with every read. Books used to be considered a luxury, this one is a necessity.
